Welcome New 5th Graders!!!

Happy School Year!!!   This website will be helpful to you throughout the school year.  It provides you with the information and resources you will need to make this school year a fun and good learning experience.  I hope you find this site helpful.   Navigate with the buttons at the top of this page.

Fifth Grade is an exciting time for the students.  They are changing classes for the first time and are quite excited about it.   It is a transition time for both children and parents.   The children are growing physically and emotionally.   As they mature, they begin to assert their independence while assuming more responsibility for their own behaviors.

We, the teachers, encourage their self-sufficiency, but not to the exclusion of seeking help from either their teachers or parents if needed.   We expect them to rely on their own resources for doing homework.   It is important for them to manage their time efficiently, so that all work is done with the utmost effort and in a timely manner.  Otherwise, the students are unprepared to fully participate in class and miss the learning opportunity that making school a priority affords them.

It can be a difficult time for parents to watch and not intervene when their child makes a mistake, but it is through stumbling that they learn to regain their balance and get themselves back on a safer and steadier track.   Accepting consequences for unacceptable behavior is part of the growing up process.  Together, we can direct our children toward a path of developing good academic and behavioral habits.

Homework is essential for reinforcing and extending lessons taught in the classroom.  Any assignment given, either in class or as homework, may be graded.

The following is an overview of the regimen for subjects taught by me.   Each of the subjects will have one project in a trimester and only one project will be assigned monthly that will be coordinated among the Social Studies, Math and English teachers.

Reading and Spelling/Vocabulary are taught in groups daily.   Reading classes will have weekly tests on the story selection.    Each unit of Vocabulary and Spelling words will be assessed during Reading class on alternate weeks:  for example, a Spelling test will be one Friday and a Vocabulary test the next Friday.    Reading assignments will be assigned at the discretion of each teacher.  Additional outside reading is required with monthly book reports.  Summer book reports should be handed in the first week of school.  They will be graded and count towards the first trimester report.

Religion, while regarded as a graded subject in school, is most importantly displayed in the way student’s use their talents and conduct themselves during school time.   Their positive interaction with friends and teachers, and full participation in Mass is indicative of the values we are reinforcing at ICS.   Most written Religion work is accomplished in class.   Studying for quizzes/tests is expected to be done at home.  Please check the links on this web site for specific requirements in each subject area.

Thank you for the privilege in teaching your child and I look forward to getting to know you as well as your child.

May God's Peace Be With You,
