ST. JOSEPH'S SCHOOL LIBRARY
EXPECTATIONS – POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
Our objectives are:
· Develop an appreciation of literature · Make reading a life-long and pleasurable habit · Learn the essential skills needed to use the library effectively and efficiently · Develop evaluation skills
Grades 1-3: (Grades 1-2 may borrow 1 book for 1 week; Grade 3 may borrow 2 books/cassettes for 1 week)
Students will become familiar with the following concepts: library citizenship, fiction and nonfiction, parts of a book, Caldecott books and other award nominated and award winning books, alphabetization and numeration.
Students will continue to master terms, concepts and skills introduced in previous years. In addition, students will concentrate on the Dewey Decimal System and various reference books, including dictionaries and encyclopedias.
Grade 5: (may borrow 2 books/cassettes for 1 week)
Students will continue to build upon concepts and skills previously introduced. Fifth year students will be introduced to the proper form of a bibliography.
All Grades 1-5:
Students are encouraged to be prepared for library classes. Part of being prepared includes returning library books when due, having a pencil case with pencils, colored pencils and crayons, having a folder (grades 2-5) and having lined index cards (grade 5).
There is a late fee of $.05 per day per book. Fines do not accrue on weekends, holidays, or days when as tudent is absent. A student’s record of returning books will impact his/her library grade.
Students are required to pay for books that are lost. The Library Media Specialist will advise the student, parent/guardian, of the cost of the book. An additional $2.00will be added to the cost to cover processing fees.
All Grades K-8:
The Birthday Book Program is the primary source of adding books to the library collection. Your child(ren) will have an opportunity to select a book in honor of their special occasion. A “special occasion” can be birthday, arrival of new sibling, Jesus’ birthday, Easter, First Eucharist, Confirmation, graduation, entering a new grade, etc.
RENEWAL
If someone else has not reserved the book/s, all students may renew their items TWICE, making the total checkout time THREE weeks. Students must, however, bring the books back to the school when initially due in order for the books to be renewed in the system. If a student leaves one book at home, the student may neither check out another book nor renew a book.
VOLUNTEERS:
Volunteers are very much appreciated. If you can dedicate your time and energy, it will be a pleasure to work with you.
